Restricting Food and Drink That Can Be Purchased With Food Stamps

H.4410 and H.4411 would impose further restrictions on food stuffs that can be purchased with SNAP. H.4410 seeks to prohibit the use of SNAP for purchasing sugary foods, and asks for federal waivers to do so. H.4411 requires individuals using SNAP to purchase store brand items when possible.

The federal government already imposes restrictions on the foods that can be purchased with SNAP, and further restriction will require further bureaucratic as well as private resources to enforce. Lawmakers shouldn’t be enlisting grocery clerks to enforce their paternalistic tendencies.
